The Flatiron Building, New York
The Flatiron building will be one of the most well known on this list but it is unknown by many. Some readers will recognize it but have never known its name or what was so special about it. The building was created in 1902 and built by Daniel Burnham and Frederick Dinkelberg.
It is an incredible piece because of its triangular shape making it appear to cut the city of New York. Many say it is one of the most iconic buildings in the world and is the symbol of New York City. While the pictures of the outside of the building are impressive it is worth trying to find some images of the interior to see the incredibly imaginative uses of the small space at the apex of the triangle on each floor.
Krzywy Domek, Sopot
The Krzywy Domek is found in Polan and at first looks like something from a dream. The building was designed by Polish architects, Szotyscy & Zaleski, and is based on houses found in old cartoon images where the buildings aren’t quite straight and appearing to lean out over the street. The warped images have resulted in the warped building in Sopot Poland and it attracts many visitors each year.
To those who know about it, it is one of the most iconic buildings and is certainly worthy of your Instagram reel.
The Capital Hill Residence, Moscow
While you might expect to find a residence called the Capital Hill in America, this one belongs in Moscow, Russia. It was designed by Zaha Hadid for an incredibly wealthy real estate developer and marks the only residential building she has ever completed. The building looks far more like a ship from Star Trek than a house.
Part of the building goes underground while a large tower emerges from the building allowing 360-degree views over the surrounding trees. This incredible building would be fitting for any Bond villain and is inspiring just to see it.
La Sagrada Familia, Barcelona
Another famous building on our list of buildings that aren’t famous will annoy some people. However, the architecture of this building is so incredible that it deserves more fame. The famous architect/artist was Gaudi and the church is so incredibly beautiful and complex that it attracts thousands of visitors every year. If you are ever in Barcelona it is a must-visit. Actually, if you are ever in Europe, it is a must-visit. If you are planning a visit we suggest waiting until 2026 as that is when repairs will be finished on this magnificent icon.
While looking at these incredible structures one question that is often asked is why. Why didn’t these architects just build another square skyscraper or square building? The answer varies from architect to architect. Some are done to make the most of the space provided, others are completed to be environmentally friendly and use sustainable materials. Others still are seen as a piece of art and are another in a catalog of incredible buildings. However, in all cases, these buildings were made to inspire. The sight alone of these iconic structures shows how we must all break free from the shackles of routine and create something individual and unique in our lives.
