Haunted houses are hard to come by. If you are someone who enjoys a late-night horror movie and you have a couple of million dollars spare then we have the perfect offer for you. A haunted mansion in Ireland has come up for sale and is being priced at the bargain sum of $2.87 million. So what are you waiting for?
The 22 room mansion is found at Hook Head Peninsula in County Wexford, Ireland. The isolated peninsula means that the owner has their own private shoreline and 63 acres of land. The house is famous in Ireland for its haunted past and has run haunted tours in the past to allow visitors to see the scary truth of the mansion.
The house is believed to be haunted because one night in the 1700s, as the story goes, a knock came on the door of the Loftus Manor. The owners answered and greeted a stranger. They didn’t find this unusual at the time as due to the unique location of the peninsula sailors would often land at Hook Head to escape stormy weather. Assuming it was a sailor they invited the stranger in for a warm drink and something to eat. The stranger was charming and soon talked his way into being invited to stay for a number of nights. The stranger stayed for many nights in the end and became close to the family, taking a particular liking to one daughter, Anne, the most.
One night as a storm raged outside the family and the stranger played cards by the fire. Anne accidentally dropped a card and leaned off her chair to pick it up. As she did so she happened to look under the table. Her eyes were pointed in the direction of where the stranger’s legs and feet should have been. Yet in their place, there were only cloven hooves. To experts, this is a sure sign of a satanic spirit and possibly the devil himself.
Anne screamed in horror and the stranger immediately knew he had been found out. He climbed the walls and escaped through the ceiling. As he escaped a crack of thunder happened outside and smoke bellowed through the house. As the smoke dissipated only a smell fo sulfur remained. Anne was so shaken by the incident that it eventually killed her. Her spirit was not happy to pass away and so Anne still haunts the mansion to this day. She walks the halls hoping to find her family but never being able to.
The house has seen many renovations and alternation over recent years yet still has its spooky character. Most recently the owners actually ran tours of the haunted house and added a zip line to the grounds to provide entertainment. The house reached new fame when it featured on the American show “Ghost Adventures” for a Halloween special. The mansion also made the news in 2014 when one visitor happened to take a picture that upon closer examination revealed two ghostly figures in a window. Anne and the stranger perhaps?
The mansion is considerably run down still and would require a lot of investment to make it a worthwhile purchase. The current owners are hoping to find a buyer that respects the past of the house and has plans to develop it with the past in mind. They are happy to sell to overseas buyers or public offices and are happy to be involved in any future refurbishments as well. Even if you don’t have $3 million to purchase the house, we highly recommend a visit. Watch out for little Anne and the stranger though.
