There is a homeless epidemic in most cities today. There are too many people in the streets and there is too little being done to combat it. When you hear of someone stepping in to help a person in need, there is no greater gift. That is why when you hear a story like that of John and Lolly, you can’t help but smile a little.
John Lochlan is a veteran and was once homeless. In fact, one-quarter of the homeless in America today are veterans. These brave people that dedicated their lives to helping protect the safety of others are often left with nothing when they return. The system does not do an adequate job of looking after them. This was the case with John.
John was involved in a car accident and could not afford to get the treatment he needed. He had severe injuries to his back that left him crippled. He was in a wheelchair, unable to walk. Then one day he met Lolly Galvin.
Lolly is part of a group that offers help to the homeless through simple things like supplies or haircuts. When she first met John, he had no interest in her help, he had given up on people. As she persisted he warmed to her and the two started to talk more. They became friends and John started to believe not only in people again, but to believe that life was worth living.
John turned his attitude around and with Lolly’s help got the surgery he needed and today he can walk. While this wasn’t a strict miracle, in some ways, it was more amazing. It shows the power people have on each other. It highlights how important we all are and that it is impossible to know what someone else is going through. If we can learn anything from this amazing story it is that we need to take an interest in those who need help. Show them support, love, and care. You never know, you might just save a life.
